A Tax File Number (TFN) is an important piece of identification issued by the Australian Government. It's your individual number that you use when filing taxes, and it's required if you're intent to work in Australia. In this article, we'll explain how to apply for a TFN and what documents you'll need to submit with your application.
Applying for a TFN
You can apply for a TFN online or by post. To apply online, visit the ATO website and click on the ‘Apply for an individual tax file number’ link. You will need to have your passport details available as well as other relevant documents such as your birth certificate or driver's licence. The online application process should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete.
Alternatively, you can download an application form from the ATO website, fill it out and mail it to the address given on the form. You will also need to attach copies of relevant documents along with your completed application form. It can take up to 28 days for your application to be processed after it has been received by the ATO.
Required Documents
Once you've submitted your application, there are certain documents that need to be included with it so that your application can be processed correctly. These include two forms of ID such as a passport, birth certificate, driver's license, etc., as well as proof of residency (an electricity bill will do). In addition, if you are applying as a non-resident of Australia then you will also need to provide proof of visa status. Your employer may also require additional documents such as bank account details in order for them to pay your wages correctly.
Once all these documents have been submitted along with your application, it should take about 4 weeks for your TFN application to be processed and approved by the ATO. Once it is approved, they will send out a confirmation letter with your new TFN number which you must keep safe because it will never change even if you move countries or change employers.
Getting a TFN is essential if you want to work legally in Australia. The process is fairly straightforward; all you have to do is submit an online form or mail in an application along with some supporting documentation proving who you are and where you reside. Once everything has been processed you’ll receive a confirmation letter containing your new TFN number which must be kept safe at all times. If done properly then getting set up with a TFN should be quick and painless!
