With so much competition in the job market today, it’s critical to make sure your cover letter stands out from the crowd. In most cases, you should send a cover letter along with your resume when applying for a job. Additionally, a cover letter can provide an employer with more detailed information about why you are uniquely qualified for the role and how you could contribute value to the organisation if hired. 

What Should I Include? 

When crafting your cover letter, there are several key elements that should be included in order to make it effective. First and foremost, make sure you introduce yourself clearly at the beginning of the letter so that the employer knows who they are reading about. Keep it personable and succinct. 

Next, it’s imperative that you understand what employers are looking for in potential candidates. Your goal should be to make yourself stand out from other applicants by showing how well-suited you are for the role you’re applying for. Make sure to draw connections between all of your qualifications and experiences with those listed in the job description. In addition, use language that makes sense for the specific industry—for example, technical terms or jargon can be used if applicable—to demonstrate that you have knowledge about the field.

Finally, explain why this particular role interests you and how working at this company would benefit both parties; this will show potential employers that you have done research into their organisation and have a genuine interest in joining their team.  

Lastly, be sure not to repeat information from your resume; instead use this opportunity to expand upon topics or bring up new ones altogether.  The final document should be no longer than one page. 

Cover letters can be an effective way of introducing yourself to potential employers and helping them gain more insight into who you are beyond what is written on a resume.
